Promenade 5k and a Swashbuckler recce

A busy day.

I took the TT bike  to the New Forest to ride the Swashbuckler route at lunchtime and ended up doing pretty much the full distance – all bar the 2.5k out and back section from Buckler’s Hard.

My impressions of the route are that it is relatively flat, there are a couple of sharp rises to  contend with but nothing long, but if it is a windy as it was today that will be the main problem.

It felt like it was blowing a gale (according to the Met Office it was 20mph). At times into the headwind I was pushing threshold Watts, downhill, and was struggling to keep at 25kph. It was hard going. Lets hope its not that windy on raceday.

The only other negative were the road surfaces. Some of them were pretty dreadful in particular the main roads! Riding over some sections were hard on the forearms and hands. I also managed to crack one of the plastic armrests from the Profile armrests on one particular bump so now need to buy some more.

However I managed the loops, 70k, at average of 29kph and stayed aero in (relative) comfort.

Having spent the afternoon out riding meant I definitely hadn’t tapered for the 5k. An early morning open water swim and an hours tempo run yesterday plus the 70k meant I arrived at the start line feeling not at my best.

Overall though I was pleased to run 18.31 – 3.42/km. I ran strongly at the start but couldn’t find anything in the last km to push the pace. Properly rested I’m hopeful that a 17.xx might be possible.

There are four races left in the series to find out but they are not a real priority so whether I will run one fresh I’ll have to see.
